VSCO Girls Invade Landrum

Sksksksk.

No, that’s not a keyboard smash, nor is it an editing fail.

That’s just the way a VSCO girl might express their excitement. The Instagram baddie has a successor, and she comes bearing scrunchies.

“VSCO Girls,” named after the photo sharing and editing app VSCO, which is an app known for its flattering filters, are taking up the internet in a storm and eventually has descended upon Landrum Middle School.

VSCO girls typically have a very specific list of items- scrunchies on her wrist and in her hair, a “save the turtles” oversized tee or crop top, usually originating from Brandy Melville or Urban Outfitters, a puka shell choker, and on her feet you can find some checkered Vans, Birkenstocks, or Crocs. A VSCO girl will probably have a “Hydro flask,” which is a type of water bottle, as well as her reusable metal straw inside her Fjällräven backpack. Her makeup is light and natural , topped off with Carmex lip balm and some Glossier Cloud Paint, her hair in beachy waves.

Defined as “Tumbler girls of 2019” by Urban Dictionary, people here at Landrum Middle School have mixed opinions on VSCO girls. Some people, like Kathleen Pabian, don’t understand their way of talking. “I just don’t get it,” Kathleen says, “I don’t really care one way or the other about their style, but when they constantly start to say ‘sksksk’ or ‘and I oop,’ it can get really annoying.” Others like Alex Ivan, don’t mind in any way. “I mean sure, the language can get annoying from time to time, but I really like their style and find it pretty cute,” she says. Some people really dislike VSCO girls. An anonymous student says, “I think it’s overrated because people take it as a personality and it’s not; And people think it is really cool and stuff but instead it’s actually really annoying.” The student says. “The language is really getting on my nerves- it’s not even funny ironically anymore. A VSCO girl should not be seen as a type of personality.”

Clad with her baggy tees and scrunchies, the VSCO girl is all the rage on the internet right now with very mixed reactions. However, like her predecessors, the VSCO girl trend will eventually die out.
