“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green

I ask you to recall a warm feeling, perhaps sitting around a bonfire, or maybe Christmas

morning. This feeling should bring back happiness and sincere fondness. This is what I feel

whenever I read the wonderful book, “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green.

The story first introduces sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, who suffers from

terminal thyroid cancer. Hazel attends a cancer support group where she met her newfound love,

Gus Waters. The two of them have a connection and flourish in each other’s presence. They go on

all types of adventures together, even with their medical setbacks.

Gus had been cancer free for a long time, and it was expected that he would outlive Hazel.

That is until he had a major relapse, that slowly sucked the life out of him. After a few very long

nights, Gus died, leaving Hazel heartbroken. Although Hazel would forever miss him, he made an

extreme impact on her life and everything that took place between them had a significant role.

In all honesty, this is one of the best books I have ever read. One of my favorite attributes

of this story are all of the deep meanings. Even the title, “The Fault in Our Stars”, refers to the

Shakespeare quote, meaning that their fate is decided. Hazel and Gus’ futures were determined

once they were diagnosed with severe cancer. Another factor is the strong symbolism and

surprising events.

What really makes this book so special and dear in my heart is the inspiration that it

radiates. Hazel and Gus new they didn’t have much time left together and they made the best of it.

They lived every day to the fullest and mentally grew with every step they took.

John Green faced reality when he ended the story with Gus’ death. It may not be the ending

everyone wanted, but it is a real issue that must be faced and looked on as an amazing experience.

Overall, John Green did a fantastic job writing this heartwarming story that will continue to inspire others to thrive every day until your last.
