Everyone has Christmas traditions they enjoy with their family, and one of the most popular is watching Christmas movies. Christmas movies have always been an important part of getting into the Christmas spirit, alongside decorating the tree, and drinking hot chocolate!
Home Alone is the most popular with Landrum students, followed by Elf, and The Grinch (animated). You might recognize these movies from holiday channels on tv, Christmas sections on streaming apps/websites, your parents or even from school.
There are six different movies in the Home Alone franchise, made from 1990-2021. Home Alone is about a family that is going on vacation for the holidays, and when they leave to go to the airport, they somehow forget one of their kids. In the original, Kevin wakes up after the family leaves and is happy that they are home alone. However, it quickly goes wrong when burglars break into the home. 8th grader Sadie Bryant said they liked Home Alone because, “it’s a funny and entertaining movie”.
Elf premiered on November 7, 2003, and immediately became a favorite among families. Buddy Hobbes was raised in the North Pole, as an elf. However, he later finds out that he was adopted, and was transported to the North Pole accidentally. After finding out, he decides to find his biological dad in New York City. As he does this, he spreads Christmas cheer to the city and develops his relationship with his biological dad and his newfound family. The theme of this film is about finding your place in the world and where you belong. Riley Boswell said they liked Elf because, “Elf is a movie that is really funny and educational,” she also said that her favorite part is when buddy and Michael were having a snowball fight with other kids.
The Grinch is a classic children’s Christmas movie known all around the world from 2018 about a furry yellowish-green man named the Grinch and his loyal companion Max living on Mount Crumpet in their solitude mountain home. The Grinch despises Christmas and those who live in Whoville. Though Who is although are extremely passionate about Christmas and so they sing Christmas carols and celebrate Christmas to the greatest extent. The Grinch attempts to “steal” Christmas, by trying to take away their Christmas spirit. While a sweet little girl named Cindy Lou Who commits herself to trying to change the Grinch’s broken, small, withering heart. “The Grinch is a movie that I really enjoyed when I was younger, and I still like watching it. It teaches you some important things, like forgiveness and that everyone has feelings,” said Isabella, a student.
