Mackenzie O’Reily, future MLB prospect is the first girl in Landrum history to play baseball for the middle school. She plays mostly outfield and sometimes plays second base.
“What inspired me to play baseball was that when I came into middle school, I really wanted to do something to inspire others,” says Mackenzie. “So, I decided to join a baseball team with all boys and thought that would be a fun way to do it.”
According to Patrick Oertli, who was on the Landrum varsity team, Mackenzie is an “above average hitter”.
“She’s actually pretty good at hitting,” says Patrick. “And, whenever she hits, she gets a lot of people in.”
Although she doesn’t play defense, she hits outstanding, with her lightning-fast hands she is able to get the barrel to the ball. It is crazy to imagine how good she will become in 5-6 years. She has got her experience from softball years ago.
We have been praising her offense but let’s talk about her athletic traits. She is one of the fastest 6 graders in the school, that’s a great combo with her unbelievable hitting. It wouldn’t be surprising if the other team decides to intentionally walk her. Some people did not think that Mackenzie would succeed in this type of sport, but she proved them wrong.
Everyone’s excited to see what Mackenzie will accomplish in the next few years. Remember the name Mackenzie O’Reily.
