A Short Story By Dinesh Dart’Souza
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sitting alone in front of my computer, toilet paper stockpiled, my dog was with me, and enough food to get me through the month. However, it was not perfect, because I had a sickness, no it was not Coronavirus, in fact it was not any physical illness at all, it was a sickness of the mind, that sickness was boredom. If I were to get through lord knows how many days of quarantine, I needed a hobby, the hobby I chose was darts. So, I went to my local essential retail company and got all the equipment I needed. I decided to follow a blog made by a pro-dartsmith named Brittany Byrd, the self-proclaimed “Duchess of Darts”. I explained what I was doing to my friends and they agreed to join me, and soon we were off to the races reading the blog and honing our craft at darts. Word spread about our virtual dart club and soon more and more people were picking up the board. As we played darts more and more we started to notice how rapidly the curve was flattening but we thought nothing of it, that was until one day a special news report came on stating that the sport of darts helped the body learn how to act more precise swift when trying to execute an operation it also helped the body with strength, speed, and endurance. This meant that playing darts not only worked as a cure for covid-19 but, it also worked as a panacea against all other illnesses and so, people rapidly began to practice darts, as well as visit Brittany’s dart blog. It reached a point, where 100% of all humanity had been announced to have dart proficiency. This all culminated when a special U.N. summit was held which played on every channel on every T.V. in which every world leader announced their resignation and said that the Brittany “The Duchess of Darts” Byrd would take their place, and then darkness it had appeared that there had been a blackout however, this wasn’t any blackout. It was pitch black ad not even the moon was illuminating light, no one could see anything. Until we saw that there was illumination coming from the sky, so we all looked outside, but there was not any moon, instead it was a giant dart board illuminating the sky. Soon the power came back on to a speech in which Brittany Byrd announced the formation of a global empire of the darts. It’s now the year 2053, I have been assigned the job of journalist and I write for The Dartmouth, which is the planet wide news agency, I have also been given a new name to match my occupation, you can call me Dinesh Dart’Souza. While this future may seem grim it’s not, you see in this dart ruled world there is no more poverty or famine there is only darts. The world has moved pass the need for currency. Criminal activities have long since ceased. War is just a whisper in the memories of those recall a time before the dartening. You can be a part of this future, so long as you understand that the time has finally come, the time to get good at darts.
