Bûche de Noël is a French Christmas cake made from a thin layer of sponge cake that is rolled up and frosted to resemble a decorative Yule log. It means “log of Christmas”. It was made in 1870 by a Parisian pastry maker who was inspired by the Christmas eve ritual of burning a log into fire. Panettone is an Italian type of sweet bread, or fruitcake, originally from Milan, usually prepared and enjoyed for Christmas and New Year. Panettone dates back all the way to the late 1400’s, created by the duke of Milan. People all around Italy and other parts of the world enjoy panettone for its rich and buttery flavor.
