Spotify Wrapped

As the year is coming to an end, people are looking forward to the holidays, New Years, and Spotify Wrapped. If you don’t know what Spotify is, it’s a music streaming platform that has over 422 million listeners. It allows you to listen to music, podcasts, and more. Towards the end of the year, Spotify releases something called Spotify Wrapped. With this, you can see your top artists, songs, genres, personal style, and total number of minutes spent listening to music. Every year they change the layout and categories but it’s always along the same lines. This year they set up solar systems of different music genres, showing each genre you explored in order.

During this time, people post their Spotify wraps on their Snapchat stories and ask each other what their results were. It is a fun conversation topic and engages people of all ages.

“My number one artist was Taylor Swift, and my top song is Sign of The Times by Harry Styles,” Laine Shapiro said.

However, people doubt if Spotify Wrapped was accurate. Some results weren’t what people were expecting. When your top artist was revealed, you learned what percentage of listeners you ranked for that artist. For example, if you listened to a lot of one artist, your percentage would be higher. However, some people doubt if this percentage is true.

“I think the numbers are pretty accurate for me,” said Gemma Mavick.

As you can see, opinions vary. While some may think the numbers were not valid, others could also argue that they were. However, it was just a machine that did this. Machines are doomed for error. Top artists could be from early in the year, and the listeners simply don’t remember. There are many explanations for this issue. According to PopBuzz, the tracking period always starts on January 1st and ends on October 31st. This gives Spotify time to put together all your results in time for December. However, it also means that none of your November or December listening habits are included. Most people don’t consider this when looking at their results. So, if you listened to a new artist in the last months, it has no effect on the Spotify Wrapped results. To many listeners, this is disappointing. While this is unfortunate, many people appreciate Spotify Wrapped.

“I don’t think that’s fair at all to be honest,” said Eddie Galen, who was happy simply that Spotify wrapped was available.

While people could be mad at poor or unexpected results, people need to appreciate that Spotify even has the resources to do this.

“I mean, alongside the holidays, I get really excited for Spotify Wrapped. It’s just really cool to see all my listening stuff,” said Eddie

In conclusion, Spotify Wrapped is a long-awaited event and drives users to listen to as much music as possible, striving for better statistics. From comparing results with your friends to enjoying a new playlist with all your favorite songs, this end-of-the-year treat is a gift to all Spotify users.
